Fall is finally here? And without the oppressive heat I can think again and I’m remembering some of what I’ve been wanting to share. Consider this a catch up, getting us all back up to speed:
1st Row: Jessica gave me this amazing incense that I swear helped usher in Fall, it was my birthday! and sort of unrelated matchbox kitchen made a beautiful cake that some of my favorite ladies and I devoured, I love my neighborhood and am having to ration how many photos of it I instagram.
2nd Row: Bianca and I share a birthday (9/28) and we celebrated at midnight at our favorite taco truck (one of my favorite moments in the history of birthdays, it filled me with joy and seemed to negate any of the bad stuff that has ever happened), Miranda and Christine sent me the most beautiful Holly Flora Bouquet for my birthday and I was so touched that I teared up, an indulgent self portrait showing off my favorite (and affordable, what?) spitfire sunglasses.
So much fun was had at my birthday! We went to a dive bar and so many people that I love showed up that I was actually kind of taken aback, More on this soon, but did I mention that I shot for Martha Stewart? Because I totally did and during a break we saw this fern at Dream Collective, Kate made me this beautiful necklace for my birthday, thanks Kate.
4th Row: Ali braided Kate’s hair and it was so pretty (more on braids stuff soon because let’s just say a lot of people want in on this action), this is currently my favorite soap (you have to smell it, it is so fresh and subtle), and finally, more evidence that I am in love with los angeles.
Going through photos from the middle of summer from a quick trip near santa barbara. It was overcast and moody and a bittersweet trip, I won’t go into details but, yeah. On our last morning we drove around so that I could find some bougainvillea to photograph. We found that first house and I fell in love. We also ran across some suburban gardens and moments that seemed so very southern california. So very perfect for applying VSCO Film to.
Visual Supply Company was nice enough to send me a copy of VSCO Film (in may I think, oops!) to play around with. It’s a plug in for light room (and aperture) that has presets that emulate different kinds of film. Once installed you just scroll through and can apply different treatments to your photos and then adjust using the same tools you normally use in light room for all kinds of film looks. I especially liked using the presets on some of the darker photographs to add more depth and emotion. Reminded me of my film roots *though I do not miss printing in the darkroom. Excited to get more practice, especially with black and white (they have t-Max 3200! as a preset!). They also have an iphone app called VSCo cam that I use sometimes on my instagrams (instead of an instagram filter).
This is the first full week I’ll be spending in LA since the middle of july! I’m so happy to be at home even though it’s so hot I want to die. I promise to share about shooting the book with Yellow Owl Workshop, shooting in Palm Springs with Sharon Montrose and then the rest of the pictures from france! For now LA is calling. Taking it all in: bougainvillea, crepe myrtle, popsicles, late night walks in the hot air, sleepover parties, cocktails, and taking care of things around the house. It’s been a whirlwind and I need a little bit of time to get recalibrated. How’s everyone else doing?
Lovely long weekend of fireworks, bbq’s, picnics, painting the kitchen, thoughtful flowers, bougainvillea, polaroids (I’m playing around with this impossible project film and my sx-70), not making the bed, moving rugs around the house, watering the plants, watching the light move around, instagramming and falling more in love with echo park in the summertime.
Beautiful and fun start to summer at Tracy’s house this past weekend celebrating the diamond jubilee. I want to spend all of summer lounging on her patio, taking in the views and hanging out with simba. (Also, have you seen her pots and the pendants she started making?). Special awesome outfit appearance complete with neon nails from beautiful Alicia, see the closet visit shot by Jeana Sohn.
I’m heading to Chicago for the weekend for a quick and fun visit–never been before, excited to see what I come across.
I got to shoot with the lovely Tamara Honey of House of Honey for the May issue of Rue. Spectacular house full of contrast and color and unexpected elements. Fun to play with the grand scale of the space, too. See the whole thing starting on page 68 of Rue.
One of the places I got to shoot for the Big Jambox was the Zoe Bios Creative Studio in Silver Lake. I met founders Caitlin and Minh recently when I shot some of their projects in San Francisco. And when I showed up for our initial meeting at their studio my moth dropped open. The space was sophisticated and fun all at once–painted white floors, overflowing plants, old and modern nestled together perfectly.
It’s not easy to describe exactly what Caitlin and Minh have created as Zoe Bios (Minh Nguyen holds a degree in Chemistry and is the former Managing Director of Natural Curiosities and Caitlin Dinkins has her MFA in Painting and is the former Illustrator and Creative Director for Stila Cosmetics): one foot is in the art world, one in interior design, they’re not quite a design collective… they call it ‘ArtEntouré’– a full circle cross-pollination of the art world with the design world.
“We focus on the visual organization of new forms—chance arrangements and purposeful compositions. We want to inspire unconventional thinking, and creative design solutions while maintaining a mindful attention to beauty and contentment in every object that we offer…we are artists, curators, and collaborators.”
I hinted at it before, but I’ve been working on a big campaign to help launch Jawbone’s latest wireless and all around awesome speaker, The Big Jambox. It was designed by Yves Behar to be the big brother to the ultra portable original jambox. And having spent the week with the big version, I can tell you the sound is amazing and really good for larger spaces and outside (parties! picnics! I’m not being paid to say this!).
I got to work with a great ad agency based out of San Francisco and, together, we created a series of images of the big jambox in some seriously great interiors. It was all very exciting, I had to sign an nda since it hadn’t come out yet and we had to be very hush hush about the product. I’m lucky to have a network of people with great homes that I could call upon at the last minute (like Tracy and Gregory and Simon and Laura and Elsie and Abby and Erin and Jerome–thanks to all of you!).
It was also a great chance for Morgan and I to do more work together–she handled the props and styling of a ton of different interiors and probably made 4 million decisions every day. And though I almost completely wore her and Heather out–we shot 3 locations a day for 4 days in a row–I thought everyone did a fantastic job and couldn’t be happier. You can see all the images for the Big Jambox on pinterest.
Obviously no shoot would be complete without a cameo appearance by Hazel. Check out all the images on pinterest.
