You can still find giant black and white posters of my work in my shop but now, for a limited time you can also buy one of 2 GIANT COLOR posters over in Debbie Carlo’s shop. Debbie is a hero of mine so this is a big deal for me. Get all the details over in her shop. (There’s a deal if you buy both, FYI).

the year in bensimons

Tuesday, January 7th, 2014

A little nod to my favorite shoe and big part of my shoot uniform, the slip on bensimon. I’ve worn them since I was a little girl and recently they’ve taken me all over the place. Some of the spots we’ve gone together (all from my instagram): San Francisco, Mexico, Hawaii, Boston, New York, the desert, Vegas, Portland, Paris, Provence, on my daily walks and all over LA. (Follow me on instagram!) Here’s to more travel for everyone in 2014.

And for good measure, a couple of candids of yours truly thanks to Michelle Pullman.

p.s. Me on the left with my cousins climbing the gate of a medieval castle in france, bensimons in place.

If you’re in paris, buy bensimons at Autour du Monde, otherwise in LA you can find them at Poketo and Individual Medley and online at Madewell. Also, totally wasn’t paid for this.

casual news: lj studio print shop

Thursday, September 26th, 2013

Hi friends. A couple of months ago I started making these big black and white posters of my photos for fun. It’s been so long since I’ve had my work be tangible and decorative that it was mainly an exercise in doing something new. I gave away a lot of the prints and have been rotating a bunch around my house. Well, the one I sent Summer ended up on instagram and there was an outcry to make the posters available. And I listen to the people. So … I launched a casual print shop today!

Visit the shop HERE!

I had originally planned to launch prints and postcards and posters next year, but the time is now, it turns out.

I’ll be adding to the shop as time goes on and have some fun collaborations for other prints on the horizon for the holidays so stay tuned. In the meantime, I’m offering 5 posters. They’re all black and white and 32″x48″ (so…huge) and are printed on normal paper, like a giant xerox. They’re fun! The price includes ground shipping. Don’t be surprised if the prints change, so if you see something you like, order it.

This is Huntington:

This is Todos:

This is Summer’s instagram of Saint-Jean in her bedroom:

See all 5 posters here in the shop!

Thanks to Summer, Daniel, Sharon and Morgan for the kick in the pants. Also as a side note, if there is a photo of mine that you really really want to have as a poster and you don’t see it here, feel free to email studio (at) laurejoliet (dot) com with “PRINT” in the subject line and we’ll see what we can do!

Also worth noting that Hazel is super into these:

art book stand / book club at griffith park

Wednesday, September 4th, 2013

Claire Cottrell and Jordan Sullivan’s art book stand / book club popped up quietly on saturday afternoon in a cedar grove in griffith park and was, honestly, magic. The heat gave way to a California golden hour and the walk back down gave us views and inspiration for days. The stands themselves offered unusual/hard to find art books/zines/posters hand picked by people who love images, who love art.

Was thrilled to get to meet some internet friends in person: Dario! Lili! And to hang out with some faves. Hamish and Andi of vacation days. The loveliest Lauren and Claire.

Also, made me want to make images I can hold in my hand.

Thanks to Tracy and Scout Regalia for the great company.

Some photos from summer so far. All from my phone. (Who wants to carry a big camera around all the time?). Some of these are on instagram. Most of them have a vsco filter on them. Highights include the re-opening of echo park lake, evening drinks and dinner at Laura’s, Claire and her yellow bike, hang outs, afternoon light hitting palm trees, hands in sun, the sun kept at bay, the beach.

I’m heading to portland this weekend (get in touch if you’re around!). Follow my instagram for the latest.

Also, I’m slowly re-working my portfolio which means endless editing of work that currently isn’t in my portfolio. Here’s a little peek (you have to push play!).

Some things:
I can’t get enough of Daniel’s renovations.
Claire offers a window into a different kind of traveling.
A creative compound I shot for the NY Times
Music I’m listening to.
The crepe recipe I use (beer!).
Love everything happening at Vacation Days.
Summer flowers.

old proof sheets

Monday, July 15th, 2013

Had a little flood in my storage and unearthed some old proof sheets of my gramma’s house. I shot her house quite a bit over about 5 years. Her home was the subject of my senior thesis; a place I spent a lot of time as a child. I turned my camera on it in school and I kept photographing it until she passed away (in the house). I think these are the pictures I took of the garden after she had died and before the house had been sold; as a way of keeping it forever. Made me think of this Susan Sontag quote:

“The truth is always something that is told, not something that is known. If there were no speaking or writing, there would be no truth about anything. There would only be what is.”

new work: anthology magazine

Monday, June 17th, 2013

One of my favorite shoots happened late this winter for the print magazine, Anthology. I got to collaborate with all around food genius Nicole Mournian (Chef at Gjelina Take away, winner of all things pie related and spectacular human being) on a beautiful outdoor entertaining story styled by Justina Blakeny (an equally talented and intimidating designer and color genius). We spent the day together prepping (and documenting) a fresh, beautiful, delicious dinner party in honor of Nicole’s birthday.

In the issue, Nicole shares recipes and stories about some of her favorite easy dishes: a perfect roast chicken, strawberry rhubarb pie, deviled eggs. See a preview of the issue right here or subscribe here. And you might remember I shot a home feature in Anthology’s very first issue.

#bougainvillea

Wednesday, June 12th, 2013

I’m finally back home after trips to new york and boston, big bear and palm springs. So much I want to download (especially my experience at CAMP which was just…incredible) and I will get to it all soon.

First I wanted to announce that inspired by CAMP, Alissa Walker and I are collaborating on a new project. The details will be rolled out shortly but for now know that it involves our love for bougainvillea: that wild, thorny, boisterous vine that explodes its colors all over this city (and many many others).

We’d love for you to participate. So all you Angelenos, please hash tag all your bougainvillea photos with #bougainvillea and make sure your geo tagging is turned on.

And if you don’t already, start following us on instagram! I’m @ljoliet and Alissa is @awalkerinla.

mixed greens at plantworks in ny opens tonight

Friday, May 17th, 2013

Friends, I’m headed to new york next week.

But before I even get there, I have work opening in a show there TONIGHT. It’s a plant themed group show called Mixed Greens that Sight Unseen organized for the Noho Design District design week festivities. I was so flattered to be included alongside Brian Ferry, Debbie Carlos, Paul Barbera and Leslie Williamson. I have three prints in the show, below is a little peek at one of them.

I am in the process of choosing prints to offer for sale through my site so this show offered me the opportunity to see some things printed. It’s pretty exciting and I can’t wait to share the prints I’m choosing!

I’ll be in new york all next week and in boston the week after so get in touch if you’re around.

in the meantime, you can enjoy my in process May playlist.
