Last week I found myself shooting a couple doors down from the beautiful Isabel Marant boutique on Melrose Place. I didn’t have time to go in and shop but I did grab these images of the facade. The play of cactus and succulents against the simple white industrial windows and plain building is such a perfect mix of California + Paris. Everything that brand touches is perfectly sophisticated and demure, with just enough of the unexpected. Love.
It’s April in Los Angeles. Life is pretty good, if a little busy. These two shots are from one of the homes I shot last week for Barbara Bestor (dreams are happening). All the houses were on the east side, this one on a hill in Silver Lake with citrus trees going crazy. And the other picture? Well that’s Michelle Pullman, my assistant, my friend, a great photographer, the strongest person I know. I wouldn’t be able to do half the stuff I do without her. So that’s her, about 8 feet behind me minding my tether. Thanks Michelle!

And for fun, I’ve started making playlists of what I listen to the most in a month. It’s partly to help differentiate the months from one another and it also forces me to listen to new things. This is the music that got me through March.
As I hinted a couple weeks ago, I recently collaborated with my friend, and braid maven, Alison Brislin on a braid lookbook! We got to work with the beautiful and enigmatic Cheryl Nichols (look at this beauty) as our braid model for the day in an awesome location in Mt Washington. It was refreshing to step outside of what I usually shoot, take the camera off the tripod and have some fun. Special thanks to my favorite Kate Miss for designing the lookbook and generally being awesome.
One of my intentions for the new year was to keep going down my path of shooting interiors and architecture, refine my process, get better, keep going. Another one was to push myself ever so slightly in new directions that might scare me a little. So I’ve been shooting things that move. Like people. And now I’m going to share a little. I’m really proud of work that I shot recently for Alison Brislin and her amazing braids. I’ll reveal the full shoot soon, but for now, it’s pretty fun to see one of the shots in her promo material (designed by Kate Miss) that she’ll be using at this weekend’s Cream Event. (Also I’ll be there as a braid model, if you’re there please say hello! This is me.)
Spontaneously spent the weekend in Joshua Tree with some lady friends. We were just there for an overnight so we packed in as much thrifting, eating and exploring as we could. The highlight was spending the afternoon right into the sunset in the park as the light got golden and the wind kicked up enough dust to give the landscape an eerie never ending horizon. We took pictures, shot a lot of vines (follow Cheryl Nichols on Vine, you won’t be sorry) and drank in one of my favorite places on Earth.
I realize I hadn’t posted pictures of my last trip to paris (besides these photos of taxidermy and these photos from pitchfork paris with bon iver). I didn’t shoot a lot, mainly places and moments that are familiar to me; have meaning for me for how invisible they can seem. These places normally live halfway around the world from me and my life in Los Angeles, but when I’m back in Paris, they feel so familiar and real and timeless that I wonder how I live without them so much of the time.

Outtakes from a recent NY Times shoot are up top–a mid century gem in encino, a couple photos from a party this past weekend at my favorite house (I even got dressed up for it), and a couple things I picked up at this weekend’s LA Art Book Fair which was enormously overwhelming and inspiring since I’m thinking about printing things that you can hold in your hand and put on your wall. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Ye Rink Mok and thought the Book Stand booth was really stellar.
One of my favorite moments of 2012 was a rainy day at the Huntington when my mom and I sought refuge in the magical greenhouse. It forced me to focus and really look. I love (am obsessed with?) greenhouses and plants and I’ve made a career (at least partially) of taking soft, quiet images and still I had to flex something in me to settle in and not just quickly want to move on to the next thing. I was reminded how fleeting all this is. All these minutes that can so easily blur into the next. And so I looked.
I don’t have it in me to write a 2012 recap other than to say that it was a lot. Incredible new friendships, good times, heartbreak, risk taking, seeing my work show up in lots of new places, not having much time to rest, beautiful spaces, karaoke, so many road trips, insomnia, inspiring clients, being in front of the camera and always, instagram. There are so many adventures I went on that I haven’t had a chance to share (a couple that I did). But that’s what 2012 was about. Being out there and not so much on here.
I’m planning a bit more downtime for 2013, making each project count in new ways, expanding and updating my portfolio, offering limited edition prints, taking on new and challenging projects, collaborating and above all looking and noticing what is quiet and important.
Lots of shooting, little messes piling up, falling behind and looking forward to a bunch of projects and news I’ve got cooking. Also going through the archives to update this place. And I really just want to hang out drinking egg nog with my friends and soak up the end of what has been, really, an excellent year. Excited to set my intentions for the next.

Stopped by the sort-of new restaurant Laurel Hardware in West Hollywood recently. Built inside the old laurel hardware store near Laurel Canyon, it was designed by Sam Marshall who also had a hand in the look of Gjelina and also this house I shot for the new york times. Lots of different materials were used and I love how the bright white front area contrasts with the moody bar in back. Also, outdoor seating! As soon as it isn’t packed all the time, I’ll have an actual meal there. Have you guys tried it yet?
