getting cozy

Thursday, December 13th, 2012

Lots of shooting, little messes piling up, falling behind and looking forward to a bunch of projects and news I’ve got cooking. Also going through the archives to update this place. And I really just want to hang out drinking egg nog with my friends and soak up the end of what has been, really, an excellent year. Excited to set my intentions for the next.

This is a little behind the scenes shot from a recent shoot at Cortez that you’ll see more of soon.

laurel hardware

Tuesday, November 6th, 2012

Stopped by the sort-of new restaurant Laurel Hardware in West Hollywood recently. Built inside the old laurel hardware store near Laurel Canyon, it was designed by Sam Marshall who also had a hand in the look of Gjelina and also this house I shot for the new york times. Lots of different materials were used and I love how the bright white front area contrasts with the moody bar in back. Also, outdoor seating! As soon as it isn’t packed all the time, I’ll have an actual meal there. Have you guys tried it yet?

walking in san francisco

Friday, November 2nd, 2012

About to head up to san francisco for some shoots and wanted to share these photos from my last trip. They’re from the foggy walk I took on my last day in the city after helping Yellow Owl Workshop make a book (here’s a candid) along with Miranda Jones. I slipped away trying to take in as much of the cold weather as I possible could. 100 degree temps were waiting for me in LA, but on this walk, I had my puffy jacket on and my hair blowing around my face. And it was glorious.

I instagrammed a lot of that trip, you can follow me on instagram here or just look me up, @ljoliet.

cortez + edible selby

Tuesday, October 30th, 2012

Cortez is finally open and it feels like it’s been here forever. Marta and Robert of Cookbook have been working on the restaurant for a while now promising a neighborhood spot for simple delicious food and a menu that changes daily based on what’s at the market. And that’s already what it feels like: a great local spot to drop by and run into friends, have a bite, have a drink. Eventually they’ll be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner but for now they’re open for dinner every day. I stopped by earlier in the week and had a tasty selection of small plates and the highlight: Basque Cake. A custardy vanilla cake that is moist and simple and amazing.

Stopped by again for the Edible Selby event on sunday night (and ran into two of my favorite people). Was happy to see Todd representing in true cat lady style. It was an evening of small plates, grenache, casual vibes and good company. So looking forward to making cortez a weekly hang out. Like maybe it’s my new baco mercat.

braid bar + fundraiser

Monday, October 15th, 2012

Those of you who follow me on instagram might be familiar with all the awesome braids I wear. They’re all thanks to my friend Ali who is a braid genius. (She and Kate and I did a whole series of braid tutorials). And Ali needs all of our help. After a routine check up, it was discovered that she had a huge tumor in her ovary that needed to be taken care of immediately. She had been having symptoms but was misdiagnosed months earlier when she had insurance. So that meant she had to go ahead with an emergency surgery sans insurance. You can read her story here for more details.

The bottom line is that Ali has a ridiculous amount of medical debt and we all want to help her out. So Kate put this amazing design together and Whitney from Myrtle generously agreed to host a braid bar fundraiser on Saturday (Oct 20) with 10% of sales going to the fund. Ali will be offering 4 styles of braids for a suggested donation all afternoon to help you primp for your evening. And if you’re anything like me, the braids will last for days. PLus there will be ribbons and flowers and other fun things to add and play with.

Also I will be there documenting all the braiding action. It’s sure to be a good time and for a good cause.

Find all the info here. Walk ins are welcome and you can also email Ali to guarantee a slot, all the info is on the site. And if you aren’t in LA but want to participate you can donate here.

Hope to see you all there.

some pretty good moments on instagram

Wednesday, October 10th, 2012

Fall is finally here? And without the oppressive heat I can think again and I’m remembering some of what I’ve been wanting to share. Consider this a catch up, getting us all back up to speed:

1st Row:
Jessica gave me this amazing incense that I swear helped usher in Fall, it was my birthday! and sort of unrelated matchbox kitchen made a beautiful cake that some of my favorite ladies and I devoured, I love my neighborhood and am having to ration how many photos of it I instagram.

2nd Row:
Bianca and I share a birthday (9/28) and we celebrated at midnight at our favorite taco truck (one of my favorite moments in the history of birthdays, it filled me with joy and seemed to negate any of the bad stuff that has ever happened), Miranda and Christine sent me the most beautiful Holly Flora Bouquet for my birthday and I was so touched that I teared up, an indulgent self portrait showing off my favorite (and affordable, what?) spitfire sunglasses.

3rd Row:
So much fun was had at my birthday! We went to a dive bar and so many people that I love showed up that I was actually kind of taken aback, More on this soon, but did I mention that I shot for Martha Stewart? Because I totally did and during a break we saw this fern at Dream Collective, Kate made me this beautiful necklace for my birthday, thanks Kate.

4th Row:
Ali braided Kate’s hair and it was so pretty (more on braids stuff soon because let’s just say a lot of people want in on this action), this is currently my favorite soap (you have to smell it, it is so fresh and subtle), and finally, more evidence that I am in love with los angeles.

Phew.

last days of summer

Monday, September 24th, 2012

…at least I hope these are the last days of summer, considering that it is already fall.

Some instax minis from some beachy girl hang time this weekend. Kate and Lisa and I escaped the heat and drove up to Neptune’s Net, ate clam chowder out of a bowls made of bread and put our feet in the water. We met up with some other amazing ladies and hatched plans for so many clubs we’ll all have to quit our jobs (working for ourselves) to devote our lives to leisure activities.

Some selects from the first leg of my journey–I stayed in a beautiful and secret house in St. Jean Cap Ferrat right on the bay. We could walk down stairs and directly into the sea, spending hours just floating, picking yachts in the distance to try to swim out to, referencing the count of monte christo. I ate my weight in saucisson, shopped for fresh fruit at the local marché and got to spend time with family. We took some afternoon trips to villa Kerylos and Eze (for the views and the champagne) and a quick morning in Monaco (meh). It was my first time really spending time on the cote d’azure and I guess I get what all the fuss is about.

dix jours en france

Friday, August 24th, 2012

Just back and have too many images to share. So I’ll start here. At my family’s house in Provence we always eat outside together, in ‘the tunnel’. It’s one of my very favorite spots on earth.
